SPCC v CICC, League Game 6, Reedy Creek Park

SPCC won by 80 runs.

Deepak Bhat

June 28, 2008

SPCC 171  (Sumit 35,Rajesh 22, Venkat 21, Warren 4/35 and Ragu 4/36)
beat CICC 91 (Warren 29, Tarun 3/21, Subashis 3/26 and Baseer 2/13) by 80 runs.

Man of the match: Sumit Biswas & Tarun Gupta.

Varai chu marah….( kashmiri for what’s up people). Both the teams arrived at the ground at 10.00 AM. The weather was hot and humid. Sun rose from west on this day. I say this because our captain finally won the toss, after 10 games in this season. SPCC decided to bat.

Sumit and Anish started the proceedings for SPCC. They played steadily until Anish was out on a good Delivery from Raj. Trilok joined Sumit in the middle and both of them played well and slowly started building the innings. Sumit, after a slow start, began playing really well and hit some good boundaries. Trilok joined in the fray too and hit some good shots. But he was soon out when he was caught on long off while trying to clear the ropes. At this stage CICC made a good change of getting in Warren and Raghu to bowl from either of the ends. These bowlers inflicted maximum damage on SPCC batsmen. Sumit became the first victim of Warren when umpire upheld the appeal for caught behind. Yasir was the next batsman in. He played some good shots and got some boundaries but he was also out soon trying to hit a big one. Immediately after that Tarun who was playing good from other end was stumped. And hence it was Baseer and Rajesh who were now left in the middle.

They partnered well and started rotating strike but soon Baseer perished to a shot that he might not have been too proud of. Deepak joined in the middle but he too was out the first ball he faced. So was Kalyan who was unfortunately run out. Subhashish gave Rajesh some company who continued the good work he was doing. But SPCC was soon all out for 171 runs

Tarun and Kalyan started the innings for SPCC. And man what an opening spell by both of them. Kalyan was unfortunate to have a chance dropped in the slips. But he had about 4 maiden overs in the spell of 7 that he bowled continuously on the trot. SPCC got their first breakthrough in the eighth over when Tarun clean bowled the Batsman. Meanwhile till this wicket three chances to get the Batsman out had gone begging. Two of them were catches and one of them was a run out chance. Tarun got two more wickets and ended with a haul of three wickets. Kudos to both the opening bowlers for having kept things tight for e.g. CICC was 16 runs from first 10 overs.

Baseer and Subhashish were brought in as the changes for the opening bowlers. Subhashish was soon rewarded for his tight line and length when he had the batsman caught behind by Anish. He soon got another wicket when a catch was nicely judged and taken by Deepak. But Subhashish was a bit unfortunate too when about three chances went begging in his bowling. Meanwhile Warren from CICC was starting to loosen up. He hit a couple of boundaries and sixes. He was soon accounted for by Baseer who was also rewarded for his good bowling. Deepak and Venkat too bowled decently with latter getting a wicket of catch taken by Deepak and the former getting the last wicket of the innings with a beautifully bowled slow ball. CICC was all out in 29.4 overs for 91 runs.

Now comes the hard part. Overall the performance by SPCC was ok. It was not up to the standards that the SPCC players can play at. Except the bowling a great amount of change would be required in both batting and fielding. Batsmen have to realize that they got to stay at the wicket. Catches need to be taken. We were lucky guys that CICC was in no mood to chase. With the amount of Catches dropped today it could have been a close game if they had gone after our bowling. We have to get this game behind us because our next opponents MCC will not give us such a chance. Every opportunity we get we have to capitalize on it. But kudos to every one who stood out in such a heat and humidity and performed their duties. We need to win at least one more game to guarantee a slot in the playoffs. So come on people half of our season is over and we are still the unbeaten team in the league. Touchwood. This has happened because each of us has played to our potential. We need to keep this going. So let us put everything in to the next game and keep marching on.

Quote of the week "Marching is when the pulse of the hero beats in unison with the pulse of Nature, and he steps to the measure of the universe; then there is true courage and invincible strength."
